PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A 19-year-old man from Westbrook has pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old in December when he was home on leave from the Marines.

Brian Nugent, who was arrested last month at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., appeared Tuesday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

U.S. marshals returned Nugent to Maine to face two felony counts of gross sexual assault, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

The Portland Press Herald said Justice Roland Cole allowed Nugent to return to his training in Missouri while he remains free on $2,500 cash bail.
