What do Sponge Bob, Eeyore, and the Cat in the Hat all have in common? They were all recently spotted roaming the halls at Martel Elementary School.
Students and staff wore these hats, and many others, as a reward for making a donation to Hope Haven Gospel Mission during the From the Heart fundraiser in February.
Hope Haven is a homeless shelter that works to serve the needs of the homeless, hungry and less fortunate of central Maine. The support that this shelter receives stays at Hope Haven and is used for services 365 days a year. Donations are used directly for food, shelter, and necessary operating expenses.
“I felt it was good to raise money for Hope Haven because there are a lot of people without money who can’t afford food and shelter,” said Amanda Marquis, a Student Council member.
This event was created and sponsored by the Martel Student Council as a way to help the community. During the week before Valentine’s Day, students gave money to show they cared From the Heart.
Wesley Burton, a fourth-grader and Student Council member, said, “It was a really great experience collecting money from other kids, with their bright faces, willing to help Hope Haven.”
Martel students raised $157.20 for the cause. On Friday the 13th, students and staff were allowed to wear hats as a show of their generosity. Each student who donated also received a heart sticker as a symbol of caring.
After the fundraiser, members of the Student Council presented the Rev. Paul McLaughlin, executive director, the money raised. He thanked the students for their donation.
“Without your life-preserving support none of this would be possible, especially in these tough economic times,” he told the students.
