TOPSHAM – Brian Sherwood hit a two-out singled up the middle to score Brandon Seubert with the winning run as Mt. Ararart outlasted Oxford Hills 7-6 in a 15-inning baseball marathon in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference.
The teams combined for 25 hits and seven pitchers during the nearly four-hour game.
The Vikings (0-2) scored twice in the first, but Mt. Ararat tied it with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
The game changed in the 10th when both clubs scored four runs to extend the contest. Oxford Hills took advantage of four walks and three singles to score its four runs. Ethan Davidson knocked in a pair with a single, while Erik Henderson and Kyle Farrar both walked with the bases loaded.
Mt. Ararat (1-0) answered right back, with Tim Bickford tying the game with a bases-loaded triple.
Cody Hadley led the Vikings with a double and three singles. Davidson, Farrar, Matt Verrier and D.J. Croy had two hits apiece.
Torrey Charnock was rthe winning pitcher.
Brunswick 16, Leavitt 3
TURNER – Leavitt kept the game close for three innings before Brunswick scored twice in the fourth and then erupted for 10 more runs in the fifth that ended the game with a 16-3 triumph in KVAC action.
The Hornets (0-2) scored all three runs in the first inning on Eric Theiss’ bases-clearing single with the bases-loaded.
Leavitt’s offense was limited to three singles.
Kolin Gauthier was the losing pitcher, while Brunswick’s Matt Liscovitz went the distance for the win. James Simmons hit a double for the game’s only extra-base hit for Brunswick.
Fryeburg 5, Poland 3
FRYEBURG – Ian Sundgren ripped a two-run, bases-loaded single during a four-run rally in the sixth inning to lift Fryeburg to a 5-3 victory over Poland in a Western Maine Conference matchup Friday afternoon.
Poland (1-2) was leading 3-1 in the sixth when three consecutive walks to start the inning gave Fryeburg the opening.
Fryeburg took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Dylan Anderson’s RBI single. Poland answered right back with a pair of runs on doubles by Matt Brewster and Nick Douglass, with Douglass later scoring on a fielder’s choice after a stolen base.
The Knights extended the advantage to 3-1 whenCasey Ray scored on Shane Waters’ squeeze play in the sixth.
Catcher Trey Ouellette had two hits for the Knights. No other player for either team had more than one hit.
Jacob Fillebrown allowed six hits and struck out eight for the win, while Mike Littlefield and Ray combined on a four-hitter.
Oak Hill 15, MCI 0
PITTSFIELD – Senior Ben Rines had an outstanding performance on the mound, tossing 65 pitches and giving up only three hits and a walk, to lift Oak Hill to a 15-0 victory over Maine Central Institute in baseball action Friday.
The Raiders (1-0) received fine offensive output from Brett Turcotte, catcher Josh Prue and Cody Plourde with three hits apiece. Brett Turcotte also collected a two-run home run en route to three RBIs in the winning effort.
The Huskies’ starting pitcher, Nate Miller, gave up three runs before being relieved in the fourth inning, and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Oak Hill rallied for nine runs in the sixth inning to invoke the 15-run mercy rule.
Boys’ lacrosse
Brunswick 16, Lewiston 1
LEWISTON – Shawn Machin crafted four goals to lead Brunswick to a 16-1 triumph over Lewiston in boys’ lacrosse action Friday.
The Dragons (2-0) got off to a fiery start with three goals in the first two minutes, and led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Peter Morrell chipped in with two goals and an assist in the winning effort.
Senior midfielder Erik Bonawitz notched the lone Blue Devils’ goal in the second quarter.
Goalies Elliot Chicoine and Jesse Leeman shared netminder duties for Lewiston (1-1) with two and five saves, respectively. Jeremy Diaz earned the win in net for Brunswick with three saves.
Softball
Brunswick 7, Leavitt 2
TURNER – Kendra Moreau hit a two-run double in the first inning and a pair of Brunswick pitchers scattered seven hits in a 7-2 softball victory over Leavitt in a KVAC matchup Friday.
Moreau’s double highlighted a three-run outburst in the first inning. The Dragons (1-1) added single runs in four of the next five innings to pull away.
Brittani Nelson had a pair of RBI singles for Leavitt (1-1) in the first and third innings. Kasara Varney also hit a double for the Hornets.
Estella Jacobs and Emily Hartzell had a pair of hits for the Dragons. Laura Bleir and Jess Russell shared time on the mound, with Bleir earning the victory.
Leavitt’s Adrie Newton allowed just five hits to take the loss.
Oak Hill 6, MCI 3
PITTSFIELD – Catcher Becca Roberts went 2-for-4 – which included a double – and drove in a pair of runs to lead Oak Hill to a 6-3 win over MCI in the teams’ season opener Friday.
Lauren Hall earned the win for the Raiders (1-0) with a complete-game, seven-strikeout performance, and Marrissa Caskin also chipped in with a pair of hits for Oak Hill.
Allie Sinclair and Kristy Huff combined to allow seven hits in the loss for MCI (0-1), which was led offensively by Lydia Fortin with a pair of base hits.
Gray-NG 5, Wells 0
WELLS – Laura Getchell fired a two-hitter and struck out 15 batters to lead Gray-New Gloucester to a 5-0 softball victory over Wells.
The Patriots (2-0) scored once in the fourth before putting the game away with four runs in the sixth. Kassie Wilson drove in one run with a triple and Brittany Adell and Natalie Tombarelli both had RBI singles.
Abby Ryan had three singles for Gray-New Gloucester.
Wells (1-1) threated to score in the fifth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Getchell fanned the next two hitters.
Oxford Hills 9, Mt. Ararat 2
TOPSHAM – Mariah Martin knocked in the go-ahead run in the second inning with a single to lift Oxford Hills to a 9-2 triumph over Mt. Ararat in softball action Friday afternoon.
The Eagles (0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. But, Frankie Severance roped a triple to plate a pair of runs for the Vikings (2-0). And, Martin knocked in Severance to take the lead for good.
Miranda Rierdeam had the only extra-base hit for Mt. Ararat with a triple.
Megan Gauger earned the mound win for Oxford Hills, giving up only two hits in the complete-game effort.
Hall-Dale 13, Madison 3
FARMINGDALE – Danielle Breault had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs to lead Hall-Dale to a 13-3 victory over Madison.
Madison scored twice in the first inning, but Hall-Dale quickly assumed control with three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth.
Hailey Longfellow and Carylanne Wolfington had two hits apiece for Hall-Dale, while Emilee Berry went the distance for the win on the mound.
