FARMINGTON – McKell Barnes recorded three singles, a double and two RBIs to help Maine-Farmington top Green Mountain College, 7-4 and 7-0, in an NAC softball doubleheader at Prescott Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, the Beavers (12-11) used a four-run fifth inning to grab a 5-2 lead en route to the victory. Barnes and Chelsea Cozzolino, of Bryant Pond, each clubbed an RBI double in the fifth.
Liz Bergeron went the distance for the win with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
In the second game, Jess Timmreck hurled a three-hit shutout. Timmreck struck out seven and walked two in the complete game.
Brittany Holden took both mound losses for the Eagles (8-18), despite producing three singles and a double over the course of both games.
Baseball
Husson sweeps UMF
FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington dropped an NAC doubleheader to Husson, 14-12 and 10-3, at Hippach Field.
In the opener, Nick Arthers and Dennis Graham each collected three hits and four RBIs as the Eagles (25-11) outlasted Farmington. Graham singled, doubled and homered in the victory, while Arthers singled twice and added a double.
In the nightcap, the Eagles used four hits and two UMF errors in the fourth to push across four runs on their way to victory. The Beavers (4-18) held a 3-2 edge after three innings, but Ethan Guerette, of Wales, and Maguire each had an RBI single in the fourth for Husson.
CMCC sweeps Hesser
CONCORD, N.H. – Freshman pitcher Jamison Henderson notched his first collegiate win in Game 2 as Central Maine Community College took a pair, 5-1 and 14-1, over Hesser College Saturday.
In the opener, the Mustangs (14-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Tyler Merchant contributed to CMCC’s run production by collecting four steals after getting on base three times with walks.
In the second game, the Mustangs were even more prolific on offense. Sophomore third baseman Alex Smith and sophomore first baseman Nick DeRice pounded out three hits apiece. DeRice also recorded a home run in the win.
Bowdoin sweeps Bates
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin completed a season sweep of Bates with 5-4 and 8-6 victories in a NESCAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, the Polar Bears (20-15) stunned Bates with another late-inning rally. In the bottom of the sixth, Joe Berte wasted little time tying the game with a blast over the right-field wall tied the game at 4-4.
After Bates catcher Jake Simon dropped a foul pop up that would have ended the inning, Bowdoin started a rally that climaxed with Ben Higgins singling in Brendan Garner for the 5-4 victory.
The nightcap saw both offenses explode for a combined 14 runs and 21 hits. Bowdoin’s Brett Gorman led the way by hammering home a pair of round trippers in his first two at-bats.
The Bobcats (8-19) cut the Bowdoin lead to 6-5 in the fifth on a Tom Beaton RBI triple, but the Polar Bears responded with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.
Track
Bates men finish second at NESCAC
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Bates College men’s track and field team edged Tufts University by half a point to take second place at the NESCAC Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Connecticut College.
Bates scored 116.5 points, behind only Williams (158.5) and ahead of Tufts (116), with Bowdoin (108) and Amherst (69) rounding out the top five teams.
It’s the Bobcats’ highest finish since coming in second in 2004.
“It was a great day today. Lots of exciting things happened,” said coach Al Fereshetian.
With every point counting big for Bates, the final two events helped seal second place. Monthe Kofos made the finals in the triple jump and finished eighth (42-4), for one point, and the distance medley relay team of Peter Corcoran, Ryan Quinn, Troy Calandra and Tom Esponnette of Auburn placed second in a time of 10:15.89, the second fastest in Bates history.
The Bobcats received three championship performances in throwing events. Junior Rich McNeil won both the discus throw (141-5) and the hammer throw (170-11), and sophomore Chris Murtagh won the javelin throw for the second consecutive year, with a top throw of 175-7. McNeil, who also took first in the discus last year, also came in second place in the shot put at 50-2. Murtagh, was also eighth in both the discus (130-11) and the hammer (144-0)
Quinn also finished fourth in both the 200 (22.65) and the 400 (49.90), scoring 10 points combined in those events.
Senior Jerome Bennett also scored big points for Bates, finishing second in the pole vault (14-08.75) and fourth in the high jump (6-01.25).
Candido Bousquet also scored big, placing third in the long jump (22-1), third in the discus (139-6) and eighth in the shot put (42-).
Also scoring valuable points for the Bobcats were junior Conor Welch, who was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:43.21); Esponnette, who was fifth in the 1,500 (3:59.25); Mark Liu, who was fifth in the hammer (154-09); Brett Epler, who was sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.09); Devin Dilts, who was sixth in the steeplechase (9:46.12); Doug Brecher, who was seventh in the 10,000 (32:53.12); Sam Goldstein, who was seventh in the pole vault (13-9); Ryan Larsen, who was seventh in the shot put (42-11); and Duncan Briggs, who was eighth in the javelin (164-0).
