ALBION, Maine (AP) — The number of convenience stores continues to go down in Maine.
According to the National Association of Convenience Stores, 56 of the stores shut their doors last year, with the number dropping from 1,125 to 1,090.
Albion Variety, which closed early this month, is among the dozen or more stores that have closed in the past year in small central Maine towns. The building has been a store since 1883.
Owner Jim Provost told the Kennebec Journal that his store began losing money early last year, and that he shut it down after he was unable to successfully restructure a bank own or establish new loans with other banks.
