PORTLAND (AP) – A score of local lobstermen has teamed up with environmental groups to collect trash and lost fishing gear from islands off Maine’s Cape Porpoise.
Bob Haskell, island steward program director for the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, said volunteers removed debris from six islands Monday. The Portland Press Herald reports that lobster boats and skiffs were used to ferry the items to the Cape Porpoise pier, where the trash was crushed.
Among the items collected were tires, balloons and plastic beverage rings.
Members of the Maine Island Trail Association also took part in the annual event.
