STERLING, Conn. – Roger L. Giasson of North Fort Myers, Fla., born in Lewiston on Aug. 19, 1922, to Alphie and Eva (Gagne) Giasson, passed away in Sterling, Conn., on April 22, surrounded by his family. He is the fourth child of eight siblings.

He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School on Oxford Street, Lewiston. He was drafted into the Army Dec. 28, 1942 until Dec. 4, 1945. He served in the European Theater with Company B 336th Engineer Combat Battalion. He took part in the D-Day invasion in Normandy on Omaha Beach and was a radio technician and an amphibious and combat engineer. He received many commendations, citations, ribbons and medals and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre.

While stationed in Hollidaysburg, Pa., he married Cecile A. Duplississ on May 20, 1943. After the war, they lived in New Jersey for four years and then returned to Auburn. He was employed in numerous shoe shops and retired from Bath Iron Works in 1981.

He and Cecile have lived in Florida since 1984 with summer vacations in Connecticut and Maine. He enjoyed Florida weather, Boston Red Sox, traveling, his family and telling his youngest granddaughter, Emily Bonner, “Good Night Irene” every night. He loved playing his banjo and musical instruments with his family. He will always be remembered by his amazing smile, sense of humor and eternally missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 65 years, Cecile; daughter-in-law, Claire Giasson of Auburn; daughters, Linda and Bert Bilodeau of Hubert, N.C., Gail and Dan Curran of Sabattus and June and Russell Bonner of Sterling, Conn.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine and husband, Daniel O’Neal, of Auburn; and one brother, Henry Giasson of Iowa.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Marie in 1948; a son, Lawrence (Larry) Giasson on Aug. 31, 2007; one sister, Germaine Nolin; and four brothers, Albert, Romeo, Marcel and Raymond.

The family would like to thank the hospice staff from DKH and all the health aides and the office staff at Dr. William Buttner.
