AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Concerns over the spread of swine flu have prompted Gov. John Baldacci to declare a civil emergency and officials to close an elementary school and a day care center.

Baldacci and Maine Center for Disease Control Director Dr. Dora Anne Mills say there have been three confirmed swine flu cases in Maine, two in Kennebec County in central Maine and one in York County in the southernmost area of the state.

The governor said declaring a civil emergency will allow the state to better respond to the emerging threat posed by the flu.

Officials decided to close Kennebec Elementary School and the Crayon Academy day care center in Arundel for seven days after two children who had household contact with a person confirmed with the flu began exhibiting symptoms consistent with the flu.
