BOOTHBAY – Samuel Cohen of Farmington won a first place for his “Coins” in the Maine Photography Show at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation Gallery.
Cohen said, “Photography is a joy to me, and a passion which I hope to maintain for the rest of my life. I studied digital photography at the Maine Media Workshop in Rockland. Next year, I will be attending New York University. I made ‘Coins’ as a way to experiment with high-speed photography and vector masking, tossing four coins per take against a table. From those shots, I combined 19 coins into this one image using vector masking and Photoshop.”
There are three awards in each of four categories: color, black and white, computer composed and student (18/under) and there is the Best of Show Award.
Local winners are:
Color category: second, Jane Spencer of Boston, (raised in Topsham) for “Lilypad #2”; third, George Paton of Bowdoinham, “Mum.”
Computer composed: second, Rebecca Kitchen of Durham, “Bell and Bricks.”
Student: first, Cohen of Farmington, “Coins.”
The show includes 115 juried works. It is a statewide, juried, annual exhibition and is open to the public through May 3, Thursday, Friday Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission. For more information, visit mainephotographyshow.com.
