Liza Gaylord, 11, a seventh-grader at Auburn Middle School, reads from her book “Charlotte’s Frog Surprise” during the Ready Read Awards breakfast held at the Green Ladle in Lewiston on Friday. Gaylord, winner of the 2008 Auburn book project for student writers, was a special guest at the event. She wrote and illustrated her story after being inspired by her sister Charlotte’s experience in raising some frogs from the egg stage. The Ready Read celebration featured keynote speaker Michelle Gagne, a teacher at Sherwood Heights Elementary School in Auburn, who emphasized the importance of reading to children. Yellow School Bus Awards honored Robert Baskett, Stephanie Gelinas, Charline O’Clair, Larry Marcoux, Jolene Bedard, Donna Spugnardi, Kim St Pierre, Estelle Rubenstein and Scott Gowell for their contributions and inspiration to the reading programs.
