While Maine’s primary and secondary schools have undergone significant restructuring to reduce administration and costs, state-funded higher education infrastructure has remained largely untouched. But on Monday, the Education Committee is scheduled to hear testimony on a bill that would change that.
The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, would eliminate the individual boards of trustees for the University of Maine System, the Maine Community College System and Maine Maritime Academy and replace them with a unified board to oversee all those institutions. The measure is sure to face opposition from higher education officials.
How many calories?
Do you really want to know how many calories those fast food fries have?
A bill sponsored by House Speaker Hannah Pingree, D-North Haven, would require that chain fast food restaurants provide accurate calorie information on its menus, menu boards and food display labels for the food and beverage items it regularly sells.
The measure is scheduled for both a public hearing and a work session before the Health and Human Services committee on Tuesday.
Annexation
The bill that would allow Carrabassett Valley to move forward with the annexation of Redington Township is scheduled to be worked on in the State and Local Government Committee on Wednesday. Even if the proposal, sponsored by Sen. Walter Gooley, R-Farmington, passes the Legislature, Carrabassett Valley residents would have to approve the annexation via referendum.
Proponents of the annexation include wind farm developers hoping to get a long-proposed and twice-denied project in the air. Opponents say the maneuver is strictly an end run for developers who are unsatisfied with how the regulatory process has played out on their proposal.
