WESTBROOK – In celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 19 to 25, the Maine Credit Union volunteer program, Credit Unions Share for ME, released the final results of volunteer efforts by Maine’s credit unions in 2008 and the number of hours credit unions spent volunteering in their community.

The program documented 21,508.25 hours volunteered by credit union staff and directors from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2008, topping the 125,000 hours volunteered mark since the program began back in 2002.

In 2008, the top five credit unions contributing the most volunteer hours were: Rainbow, Lewiston, 2,560; Five County, Bath 2,260; Saco Valley, Saco, 2,245.50; Ocean Communities, Biddeford, 1,654.75; and Midcoast, Bath, 1,472.50.

The top five credit unions with the most total volunteers were: Rainbow, 207; Five County, 197; Saco Valley, 169; tied, Midcoast and Ocean Communities, 127; and PeoplesChoice, Biddeford, 103.

Volunteers participated in a variety of community service initiatives from delivering meals to seniors and donating blood to youth athletics to serving as flag bearers at military funerals.
