BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Prosecutors in North Dakota say a 78-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of his wife after a marriage of more than 45 years.

Burleigh County prosecutor Richard Riha said 74-year-old Ludwina Zimprich died sometime Monday night or early Tuesday of multiple blows to the head. The type of weapon hasn’t been identified.

A judge ordered Matthias Zimprich of Bismark held without bail after his attorney and prosecutors said he was a suicide risk.

Zimprich’s attorney, Al Wolf, said his client was being treated for cancer.

Zimprich told the judge he had owned a trucking business and had been retired since 1985.
