AUGUSTA (AP) – A special moose hunt is set for this summer in designated areas of eastern Aroostook County in an effort to ease crop damage and reduce the number of collisions involving moose and motor vehicles on routes 1 and 161.
The Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife announced Wednesday that 100 permits will be available for the controlled hunt, which runs from Aug. 17 to Sept. 19. Up to 55 percent of the permits will go to eligible landowners and up to 45 percent to Registered Maine Guides, who may not hunt themselves but may select three permit holders.
The deadline for online applications is June 14, with a drawing set the following day. The department said moose taken under the permits are in addition to the statewide bag limit.
