BATCHELDERS GRANT – Wildlife biologist Lesley Rowse will reprise last year’s two-hour guided birding tour in the White Mountains National Forest by again leading an early morning bird walk on Saturday, May 9.
The early-birders-get-the-birds trip starts at 7 a.m. from an area near the Hastings Campground off Route 113. Don’t expect to drive up Route 113 through Evans Notch from the south since the road is still gated down there. Instead, take Route 2 to Gilead and follow Route 113 south to a road junction with Wild River Road, just beyond the swinging bridge over Wild River.
Last year’s walk drew 11 birding enthusiasts from Maine, New Hampshire and Oregon. The highlight of the trip came when some watched a great blue heron take flight over Moose Pond only to land and people-watch the watchers from atop an overlooking spruce.
Bring your binoculars. Rowse will identify birds seen and heard during the learning adventure.
