PARIS – The Masonic Lodge of Paris is raffling a boy’s and girl’s bike for each grade at the Paris Elementary School.
“All they have to do is read a book,” said Joe Cormier of Paris, co-chairman of the event along with Grand Master Richard Chamberlain.
The Bikes for Books campaign, which was initiated by Chamberlain, allows children to receive one raffle ticket for each book they read.
The tickets will then be drawn at the school’s field day event in June.
The Masonic Lodge of Paris has a long tradition of serving the community. It also does events like the child identification kits, Cormier said.
“It’s just a way to give back to the community. We’re trying to promote school work and if you continue to read, you can see it does have its rewards and its benefits,” Cormier said. “We don’t make a dime off of it.”
The winners of the bikes will also receive a helmet, he said.
The raffle has been ongoing for the past month and a half. Teachers are asked to sign off on the books as they are read.
