Madeline Cote, right, takes information from Marion Bunker of Leeds as she drops off medications for disposal at Lewiston High School during Androscoggin County Medicine Disposal Day on Saturday. “I just wanted to get rid of them so they didn’t end up in the wrong hands,” Bunker said. The group collected 2,200 bottles of medicine, including 136 bottles of controlled substances. The number of doses, 56,000, was nearly three times the number collected last October, said Christine Letcher of Healthy Androscoggin, which sponsored the collection. “There’s definitely a movement afoot,” Letcher said. The collection helps keeps medications out of substance abusers’ hands and out of the drinking water supply, she said. She hopes to hold the event twice a year. Those who weren’t able to make it to Saturday’s collection can call their pharmacies and ask about the state’s “take back” program, or wait for Healthy Androscoggin’s next event.
