EDGECOMB (AP) – A New York man who’s wanted in Connecticut for selling counterfeit jewelry is in custody in Maine following his arrest after a traffic stop in Edgecomb.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said 40-year-old Artour Katanov was arrested Tuesday on Route 1 after motorists reported that his car was speeding and passing unsafely.

Officials told the Portland Press Herald that Katanov was sought by police in Stamford, Conn., where he and an accomplice allegedly sold stainless steel jewelry that had been plated to resemble 18-karat gold.

He was charged with operating after suspension and being a fugitive from justice.

The sheriff’s office said investigators found that Katanov has tried to sell what they believe to be counterfeit jewelry in Portland, Rockport, Lewiston and Augusta.
