AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Two laws enacted by the Legislature will restrict smoking at Maine state parks and beaches and allow rentals and sales of merchandise at state parks and historic sites.
Gov. John Baldacci ceremonially signed the two bills on Wednesday.
One of the new laws will prohibit smoking on state park beaches, playgrounds, snack bars and group picnic shelters.
The other allows the Department of Conservation to rent equipment such as canoes, kayaks and bicycles, and to sell merchandise such as T-shirts, hats and mugs, at state parks and historic sites. Money collected from rentals and sales will be used for operation and maintenance of the parks.
The bill requires that the parks contract with Maine vendors whenever possible in order to support Maine-based businesses.
