PORTLAND (AP) – The new police chief in Maine’s largest city wants to give Tasers a three-month tryout.
Chief James Craig told a Portland City Council committee that stun guns could reduce injuries to officers and members of the community. His proposal calls for purchasing 10 Tasers, some of which would be ready for use this summer.
The City Council would have to sign off on the experiment. Councilor Dory Waxman tells the Portland Press Herald that she’ll give the proposal close scrutiny.
Craig arrived on the job this month from Los Angeles, where Tasers have been used by police for years. South Portland and Falmouth police and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department also have Tasers, and Portland police support the proposal.
