PORTLAND (AP) – Sen. Olympia Snowe and former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling have met in Washington with representatives of the Maine Chapter of ALS to review advances in research, treatment and advocacy for ALS patients.

Snowe praised Schilling on Tuesday for his efforts on behalf of those stricken with amyotropic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The Maine Republican is a lead sponsor on a $10 million appropriations request for ALS research.

During his baseball career, Schilling organized Curt’s Pitch for ALS, in which fans donated to the ALS Association for every batter he struck out. He also hosted a radio show and released a charity wine called Schilling Schardonnay that raised money for patients and research.
