PORTLAND (AP) – Portland’s new police chief is loosening a requirement that officers wear their caps at all times.
Chief James Craig says he thinks the caps are important, but officers don’t need to have them on every time they get in and out of their cars.
The Portland Press Herald says that after two weeks on the job Craig has made several small changes as he builds a rapport with employees.
The hat rule was mandated by former Chief Tim Burton who felt that that officers exuded more professionalism and command presence when wearing their police hats.
Craig says he’s considering a number of other changes.
Craig has been on the job two weeks. He came from the Los Angeles Police Department, where he worked for 28 years.
