TEL AVIV – Respironics voluntarily recalled nearly 5,000 monitors designed to spot apnea in infants, saying the product’s audible alarm could fail.

The Murrysville, Pa., company, a member of the Philips Healthcare group, in a Friday statement said it recalled SmartMonitor 2 model numbers 4002 and 4003. The units were distributed in the U.S. and Canada.

Respironics said it received one report an alarm failed and that no injury resulted. The company’s customer-service line is 1-877-387-3311.

It said that caregivers and parents should continue to use the product until it is replaced unless a physician tells them otherwise. “Even if the audible alarm fails, the unit will still trigger a visual alert (red lights will come on),” Respironics said in the statement.

Respironics said it has notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the recall.

Apnea is a condition in which a person periodically stops breathing while asleep.
