PARIS – Two Lewiston men on Friday denied charges that they stole and crashed two vehicles while at a party in Sumner.

Stephen C. Gurney, 23, of River Street in Lewiston, pleaded not guilty to robbery, aggravated assault, theft, and two counts of aggravated criminal mischief. Edward E. Barbioni, Jr., 26, of Holland Street in Lewiston, pleaded not guilty to robbery, theft, two counts of aggravated criminal mischief, and violation of conditions of release.

The two men were arraigned in the Oxford County Superior Court before Justice John Nivison.

According to police reports, Gurney and Barbioni attended a party in Sumner in March and attempted to leave in a late-1990s Ford Contour. The car lost control on the muddy road and crashed into woods.

Police say Gurney and Barbinoni were able to persuade two men at the party to help try to tow the car from the woods and tried to steal a 2008 Ford F-250 pickup truck belonging to one of the men. The truck was crashed into the Contour.

Gurney is also accused of fracturing the elbow of a 29-year-old man who tried to prevent the theft of the truck and knocking him unconscious. Both Gurney and Barbioni were arrested after they were found walking on Route 140 after the incident was reported.

The Contour was totaled and damages to the pickup were between $8,000 and $10,000.
