Dear Sun Spots: Would someone know the name or names of salons that cut hair to donate for wigs for cancer patients? – Marion, No Town.

Answer: In addition to responses from readers, people may donate hair for wigs that will be given to women who have lost their hair due to cancer-related treatments at this year’s Relay For Life of Androscoggin event at Edward Little High School in Auburn.

On Friday, June 12, local hair stylists will cut ponytails and tidy up the haircuts beginning at 11 p.m. To donate, hair must be a minimum of 8 inches long and must not be permanently dyed or bleached. To sign up to be a hair donor, contact Megan Barrett, community executive for the American Cancer Society, at 373-3704 or e-mail Megan.Barrett@cancer.org.

Dear Sun Spots: With summer approaching, we’re thinking of putting in a small swimming pool, either above or below ground. Before we do, we’d like to know what the Maine state regulations are regarding fencing, gates or other safety precautions. Could you find this information or an address we could write to? Thanks for a very interesting and helpful column. – No Name, No Town.

Answer: Sun Spots spoke with a representative at Rick’s Swimming Pools, 1057 Sabattus St., Lewiston who noted that there are some regulations depending on what type of pool you are planning to install. For example, all inground pools must be fenced in. There are some electrical regulations and also some local municipalities have permit requirements, so you may need to get a building permit and an electrical permit. The local pool dealer that you choose to purchase your pool from will be able to guide you through the process.
