RUMFORD – To acquaint town meeting voters with candidates seeking municipal offices next month, a Meet the Candidates forum will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 28, in the municipal building auditorium.
Municipal elections will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at the American Legion Hall at 184 Congress St.
There are two contested races: a selectman’s seat and the tax collector position.
Seeking re-election to the Board of Selectmen is incumbent Chairman J. Arthur Boivin. Running against him is former selectmen’s Chairman Greggory Buccina.
Four new candidates are seeking the tax collector position, which will be vacated on June 9 by Carlo Puiia.
Puiia, who was hired last month to serve as town manager, will be appointed to the position after elections end.
The four candidates for tax collector are John Giambattista, Deborah J. Giasson, Diane E. Paterson and Joseph F. Roberts.
Running unopposed for another three-year term as an assessor is incumbent Ronald E. Russell.
According to Puiia, the candidates will be asked eight questions in advance of the forum, to enable them to prepare answers ahead of time. Then, during the forum, they will be asked two more spontaneous questions. Following the question-and-answer session, each will be asked to make a statement.
Puiia said Thursday morning that the forum gives the public a chance to learn about each candidate and put faces to names.
The forum is something new this year. In the past, candidates have been interviewed individually.
“We felt it was more appropriate to gather them all together,” Puiia said.
