CLAREMONT, Calif. – Ben Stein is on a tour de force at the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships, and Amrit Rupasinghe is co-piloting in doubles action.
Stein, the Bates College senior, won two matches on Saturday to advance to the finals of the singles championship. Stein defeated the top seed in the 32-player field, John Kauss, 7-5, 7-5, to reach Sunday’s final. He’ll play No. 5 seed Michael Goodwin.
Stein, now 21-6 in singles play this year, becomes the second Bates player to reach an NCAA final. His teammate for one year, Will Boe-Wiegaard, played in the final in both 2005 and 2006, winning the championship in 2006.
Stein and Rupasinghe faced Michael Greenberg and Will VandenBerg in the doubles quarterfinals, winning the first set in a tiebreaker and cruised in the second set for a 7-6 (1), 6-2 victory. Following the singles final at noon Pacific time, Stein and Rupasinghe will play in the doubles semifinals for the second straight year.
