FARMINGTON – Franklin Community Health Network has announced it will close its child-care program effective June 26. The closure will affect the families of the 19 children served by the program, four full-time employees and one part-time employee. Currently, seven of the 19 children have parents employed by FCHN.
Franklin Child Care was established by FCHN eight years ago to serve the children of its employees at a time when there was a shortage of quality day-care openings. At full capacity Franklin Child Care served 24 children, from infancy through school age, and eventually opened slots for community members in need of child care. The demand for child care among employees and the community has decreased since that time, resulting in a substantive subsidy from Franklin Memorial Hospital to sustain the program.
“Closing our child-care center is a difficult decision,” said Jerry Cayer, FCHN/Franklin Memorial Hospital’s executive vice president. “Unfortunately, this decision is one of several we will likely have to make as we grapple with significant increases in uncompensated care, bad debt and reduced reimbursement for clinical services.”
