BRUNSWICK – Andrew J. Alexander Jr., 83, a lifelong resident of Lisbon Falls and Durham, died Monday, May 25, at Midcoast Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 9, 1925, in Lisbon Falls, the son of Andrew J. and Goldie (Coolidge) Alexander. He was educated in Lisbon Falls and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School, Class of 1944. Immediately after his graduation, he entered the U.S. Army serving during World War II and received a Purple Heart for an injury he sustained during battle.

In January 1949, he married Mildred Dumas and together they made their home in Durham. He was employed at the Farnsworth Mill and also worked for many years as a custodian at Bowdoin College.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and puttering around the house on various needed projects. He also loved to spend time with his many cats.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred (Dumas) Alexander of Durham; four grandchildren, Thomas St. Germain of Durham, Carrie St. Germain of Alaska, Angela Loucka of Tampa, Fla., and Jonnell Ramos of Costa Rical; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Pauline (Alexander) Harvey in 2006.
