MEXICO – A full-time police officer and a reserve officer were hired Wednesday by the Board of Selectmen.
Daniel P. Carrier, a reserve officer for the Mexico Police Department, was chosen from four applicants to fill a full-time position that has been vacant for many months.
Chief Jim Theriault said none of the four applicants had completed the required police academy training. Carrier has completed the shorter, 100-hour course. He will be required to complete the longer program within a year.
Carrier is also a trained firefighter, serves as a reserve officer for the Dixfield Police Department and has worked for the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer. He is expected to begin his full-time duties in about two weeks.
David Hodson, owner of MT Pockets, a towing business in Dixfield and a reserve officer for that town, was hired as a reserve officer for Mexico.
In other business Wednesday, the board learned of a planned “walking” workshop to help the town apply for grant money to improve the area’s trail system.
Town Manager John Madigan said
The Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments and the Maine Department of Transportation are sponsoring the Mexico Walking Workshop set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 4. All businesspeople, municipal officers, residents, public safety officials and school officials are invited to take part.
The walk will begin at the Town Office and will cover existing or planned walking trails. The MDOT has money available for grants in support of such trails, Madigan said.
In other matters, selectmen discussed eight tax-acquired properties, and informally agreed to put two up for sale. They are the former bakery building on Osgood Avenue and a 10-acre parcel with a smaller, abutting woodlot on Backkingdom Road.
A decision on asking prices for the two properties will be made at the June 10 board meeting once additional details are considered. Town officials are trying to work out payment plans with the owners of the six remaining tax-acquired properties.
Also on Wednesday:
• The Mexico Public Library received a $1,950 grant that will be used to replace two eight-year-old computers.
• Recreation Department director Greg Arsenault announced four upcoming events: professional wrestling on June 20, bands and vendors on July 4, road rally on July 17, and a music “metalfest” sometime in August.
