GENEVA (AP) – The 65-nation Conference on Disarmament has taken a step toward negotiating a new nuclear arms control treaty after a dozen years of deadlock.

Diplomats in Geneva welcomed the adoption of a “program of work” as a breakthrough for the conference. The body has been stalemated since it wrote the nuclear test ban treaty in 1996.

The program foresees talks on halting the nuclear arms race.

It indicates a top candidate for a new treaty is one to ban production of so-called “fissile materials” – highly enriched uranium and plutonium – needed to create atomic weapons.

Cocaine found in Red Bull drink

VIENNA (AP) – Austria’s health ministry says traces of cocaine have been found in samples of Red Bull Cola energy drinks.

Spokeswoman Sigrid Rosenberger says the traces are very slight and do not pose a health risk.

Earlier this month, several German states told retailers to stop selling Red Bull after a sample test by authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia state found 0.4 micrograms per liter in the drink.

Rosenberger said Friday the Austrian findings hovered around the detection limit.

Swine flu toll up to 97 in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexico is reporting two more deaths from swine flu, bringing the country’s toll to 97.

The Health Department says that 5,029 people have been sickened nationwide. That number includes the 97 deaths.

Almost three quarters of the people who died had other complications, such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory problems, health officials said Friday.

The virus that has sickened more than 13,000 people in 48 countries and been linked to more than a 100 deaths worldwide has largely subsided in Mexico, where it was first identified in late April.

But Mexican officials have said the confirmed toll has been rising as scientists test a backlog of samples from patients.
