PORTLAND (AP) – The University of Southern Maine says Gary Fifield is coming out of retirement to coach the women’s basketball team.

Fifield’s appointment was announced Friday, just hours after interim coach Mike McDevitt was named coach of the women’s team at St. Joseph’s, where he previously coached for 16 seasons. McDevitt replaces Deb Reardon, who left the program last month.

Fifield coached USM for 21 seasons before retiring last September. McDevitt was an assistant under Fifield for five seasons before becoming interim coach.
