Gov. John Baldacci and members of Maine’s federal delegation are scheduled to meet with U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu in Washington, D.C. on Friday to discuss Maine-based renewable energy projects.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe and Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud as well as Dr. Habib Dagher, a professor from University of Maine at Orono, are expected to attend and promote establishing a National Offshore Wind Research Center at the University of Maine.
Dagher, known for his work with wood composite technology, hopes to research and develop composites capable of being used as the material to build massive, offshore windmills, according to Collins’ office.
State officials hope developments in Maine could eventually be used as a national model for a green energy economy, according to a letter sent to Chu by Collins requesting the meeting earlier this year.
