PORTLAND (AP) – Portland native Kevin Concannon, a high-ranking state official in Maine, Oregon and Iowa, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to a post in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The nomination was applauded Tuesday by Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe, who said Concannon has a wealth of experience in public health policy that makes him well-suited to become undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services.

Concannon headed the Oregon Department of Human Services from 1987 to 1995, the Maine Department of Human Services from 1995 to 2003 and the Iowa Department of Human Services from 2003 to 2008.

He was commissioner of the Maine Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation from 1980 to 1987.
