PORTLAND (AP) – A 41-year-old York man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for arson and illegal possession of firearms.

Patrick Simpson was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland for deliberately starting a fire that caused $32,000 in damage at Shelton’s gift and clothing store in York. According to court records, Simpson leased the premises and had increased the insurance coverage shortly before the Jan. 16, 2007, fire.

Two months later, police seized two handguns and a large amount of ammunition from Simpson’s home. At that time, he was prohibited under federal law from possessing guns and ammo because he had previously been committed to a mental hospital.
