NORWAY – Russ Newcomb is running for his fourth term on the Board of Selectmen with hopes of continuing his work to improve the town without raising taxes.
Newcomb is one of six unopposed candidates on the June 9 ballot. Polls will be open at the Norway Fire Station from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Town Clerk Shirley Boyce said.
Newcomb, a 53-year-old Country Club Road resident, has served on the board for the past nine years.
A member of the Oxford County Budget Committee for eight years, he was elected to serve on the Maine Municipal Association’s Legislative Policy Committee this past year. The committee meets monthly during the legislative sessions to try to provide information to legislators on the bills that effect Norway and other towns, Newcomb said.
Prior to being elected to the Board of Selectmen, Newcomb served for several years on the Budget and Road committees. He has volunteered for many years with the Norway Fireman’s Relief Association.
Newcomb said he is running again as a way of giving back to his community.
“I really like trying to help people out,” he said. “I have had an interest in town government since high school and I really enjoy a challenge: trying to find ways to continue improvements to Norway and still have a tax rate that is affordable.”
The most important issue facing Norway is taxes, he said.
“Taxes have always been important, but in the tight economic times of today, it is a constant struggle,” he said. “I am always trying to explore ways that, as a town, we can accomplish more for less money.”
Revenue flowing to towns from the state are constantly being revised downward, Newcomb said.
“This gives the Norway residents a couple of choices,” he said. “We can either do less or find ways to pay for services ourselves. The select board and town manager are always looking for ways to combine services, either within the town departments or neighboring towns.”
Newcomb believes it is important to find ways to blend the town’s mix of historical downtown properties and business opportunities.
Other candidates are:
• Incumbent Stephen Cummings of Orchard Street is running for one of two open seats on the SAD 17 Board of Directors.
• Timothy Ingram of Pleasant Street is seeking the second seat, which is being vacated by Dy-Anne Gurney of Waterford Road, who announced earlier this year that she would not seek another term.
• Incumbents Carolyn Costanzi of Parsons Drive and Stephen Veazey of Kal Shores Road are running for re-election to the Norway Memorial Library Board of Trustees.
• Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Yates is running unopposed for the position of fire chief. Chief Mike Mann is retiring after several decades on the force.
