MECHANIC FALLS – The 28th-annual Pottle Hill Road Race is scheduled for Sunday, June 20, starting from town square in Mechanic Falls.
Known over the years as “New England’s Toughest 10K,” the event starts with a tamer one-mile Fun Run at 8:30 a.m., followed by the start of the 5K at 9 a.m., and the 10K at 9:15 a.m. The course is a hilly and scenic and mostly rural, well marked, wheel measured, with split time and water stations along the course. Refreshments will be available after the race. Registration fee is $18. Registration for the fun run is $4. Many prizes will be awarded including cash prizes for winners of the 5K and 10K.
The annual road race is Pottle Hill’s primary fundraiser, with all proceeds dedicated to Pottle Hill and Pathways programs for persons limited by disabilities or by society.
There are several levels of sponsorship, with sponsors displayed on banners, T-shirts, in the media and newsletters. Sabattus Rec youth sports registration
SABATTUS – Sabattus Rec Club will be holding football and cheering signups for Oak Hill Youth Programs. Football and cheering is open to residents of Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales.
Flag football is for children entering Grades K-2; Tackle football is for children entering Grades 3-8. Cheering is for children entering Grades K-8.
Sign-ups are Monday, June 15 from 5 to 7p.m. at Sabattus Central School and Carrie Ricker Middle School. Please bring any returnables with you to sign-ups.

Class D softball tourney set for June 12-14
LEWISTON – The Andy Valley ASA Umpires Assocation will host a softball tournament June 12-14.

A&J Open tennis tourney on tap
SOUTH PORTLAND – The A&J Open, the first of four major outdoor tournaments sponsored by the Maine Tennis Association, will be held at the South Portland High School courts on the weekend of June 19-21. Men’s Open Singles play will begin at 2 p.m. Friday.
Competition also will also be held in women’s open singles, mixed doubles, men’s 35-and-over singles and men’s 55-and-over singles.

Golf Classic at Sugarloaf
CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Register now for the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area’s 15th-annnual Golf Classic Thursday, June 18 at Sugarloaf Golf Club and receive a free round of golf valid through the 2009 season.
This year’s golf tournament is offering a number of prizes including several $50 cash prizes, a ProTour Memorabilia Gift, a $250 American Express gift card, an iPod Nano and a 2009 Ford Focus.
In addition to the chance to win a number of great prizes, participation in the golf tournament includes lunch at the Sugarloaf Golf Club, the 18-hole greens fee and cart, as well as the opportunity to play at the course Golf Digest has called one of the 100 greatest public golf courses in America.

Maine Red Claws announce hoop camp
PORTLAND – The Maine Red Claws will hold their inaugural Red Claws Basketball Academy and Junior Red Claws Basketball Camp from August 17-21 at the Portland Exposition Building.
Instruction for the camps will be provided by Red Claws coaching staff, and the programs will be run by The Hoop Group, which has more than 30 years experience running youth camps. Boston Celtics legend K.C. Jones will be a special guest on August 21.
Both camps are coed.
The Red Claws Camp is for ages 12-17. Cost is $250, and the program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Junior Red Claws camp is for ages 8-11. Cost is $175, and the program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily.
The goal of the younger camp is to teach the verbiage and rules of the game, then develop skills through drills. The object of the older camp is to develop skills. Campers will compete in 3-on-3 games to ensure that every player is involved in every play.
