PORTLAND (AP) – Maine’s largest city has agreed to install cobblestones on a busy street in the Old Port to deter skateboarders.
The $6,000 plan was authorized Tuesday night by City Council’s Public Safety Committee. Chairman Dan Skolnik tells the Portland Press Herald that he’ll ask the City Council to impose an emergency skateboarding ban if the project is not completed in a timely fashion.
The problem is skateboarders zooming down Exchange Street. Merchants in the busy shopping district say the skateboarders are going too fast, performing tricks and intimidating pedestrians.
