NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – Carolyn Esther Simpson Scott, 78, longtime resident of New York City, died Friday, June 12, 2009.

She was the daughter of Robert J. and Nellie B. Simpson of Lewiston.

She entered Lewiston High School in 1948 and the Auburn School of Commerce in 1950. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in 1966, and then worked in the Columbia Graduate School Department of Economics.

She was later employed at the United Nations for many years in UNESCO.

She retired in 1992 and spent her retirement years doing volunteer work for the International Lighthouse for the Blind and other charities.

She is survived by two nephews, Jack M. Hurdle II, of Senoia, Ga., and William Robert Hurdle of Baton Rouge, La.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Campbell Scott; her parents; sisters, Ellen Simpson Hurdle and Janet Mary Simpson; and a brother, Robert J. Simpson Jr.
