Mount Vernon – George R. Edwards, 72, of Mount Vernon, died Monday, June 15, at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston, following a lengthy illness.

George was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Lewiston, the son of Reginald and Corneille (Davis) Edwards.

He grew up in Mechanic Falls, graduating from Mechanic Falls High School in 1955. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving until his discharge in 1959.

In 1962, he began his career as a game warden for the state of Maine. He was first stationed at Pittston Farm, where he served for several years before transferring to the Belgrade Lakes region. In 1977, he was the honored recipient of the Game Warden of the Year award, and in 1985 he retired after 23 years of service. Following his retirement from the Warden Service, he worked at Kents Hill Lumber for several years.

George worked hard, and in his free time enjoyed camping with his family, canoeing, fly-fishing, bird hunting and reading. He was a member, and Assistant chief of the Mount Vernon Fire and Rescue.

He was predeceased by his son, William “Billy” Edwards in 1972, and a sister, Corneille D’Volio.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Edwards of Mount Vernon; two daughters, Rebecca Hooper and husband, Stephen, of Vienna, and Amy Edwards of New Vineyard; one brother, Reginald O. Edwards Jr. of Upton; two sisters, Clarissa Pare of Lewiston and Priscilla Edwards of Poland and their families; and two granddaughters, Taylor Berry of New Vineyard and Clarissa Hooper of Vienna.
