PARIS – A Franklin County man was sentenced Wednesday to eight months in jail after admitting earlier this month that he ransacked his ex-girlfriend’s Norway apartment and killed her two kittens.
David L. Coffren, 25, of 1542 Salem Road in Salem Township, was sentenced by Justice John Nivison in Oxford County Superior Court. Nivison sentenced Coffren to 3 1/2 years with all but eight months suspended.
Nivison also ordered Coffren to serve two years of probation, during which time he must not use alcohol or illegal drugs, have no contact with the woman, have a substance abuse and psychological evaluation, and pay $4,190 in restitution. Coffren has been incarcerated since his arrest, and will receive credit for time served.
Coffren was accused of destroying several items in the woman’s apartment in the early morning hours of Oct. 17, when she was not present. Her two 6- to 8-month-old kittens were found dead in the stairwell. It was later determined that they had fractured skulls.
On June 2, Coffren pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and two counts of cruelty to animals. He also pleaded guilty that day to a Franklin County charge of operating after habitual offender revocation, and was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail concurrently and pay a $500 fine.
Of the restitution payments, $3,200 will go to the woman, $850 will go to the building’s landlord and $140 will go to the town of Norway as compensation for a veterinary examination of the kittens.
In November, a judge refused a plea offer that would have had Coffren serve 90 days of a two-year prison sentence with a period of probation and restitution payments.
