LEWISTON – Demand for a new map highlighting the history and historical resources on the Androscoggin River has been so strong the Androscoggin River Alliance has decided to distribute the maps over the next four weekends, said Neil Ward, program director for the alliance.
The maps are free and were paid for with grants from the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund and the Alfred M. Senter Fund.
They are new, full-color, 19 inches by 26 inches and suitable for framing.
The alliance had 750 copies of the map printed. The maps shows a list of historical figures connected to the Androscoggin, including everyone from Joshua Chamberlain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, to U.S. Sen. Edmund Muskie and Vice President Hannibal Hamlin.
The map marks all the conserved lands along the river, as well as labeling all the boat ramps, canoe launches, canoe trip routes, dams and picnic areas.
Ward will make the maps available on the following dates:
• Saturday, June 20, at the Lewiston Public Library from 9 a.m. to noon.
• Saturday, June 27, at the Auburn Marina from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Saturday, July 11, at the Bethel Historical Society from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Saturday, July 18, at the Frontier Restaurant in Brunswick from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
