PARIS – Josephine G. Monahan, 85, of Bethel, wife of James Monahan, died in Paris on June 18.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1923, in Bethel, the daughter of the late John and Virginia (Edgerly) McMillin and was educated in Bethel schools, graduating from Gould Academy, Class of 1941. She married James Monahan on Sept. 5, 1942, in Portland, and for the next 28 years lived in various places around the world as the wife of a career member of the U.S. Air Force, returning to Bethel in 1976.

While in Bethel, she had worked at the Bethel Inn for several years. She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, the Bethel Historical Society, an honorary member of the Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Air Force Association.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, James Monahan of Gilead; one daughter, Patricia Monahan of Reno, Nev.; two sisters, Catherine “Kay” McMillin of Bethel and Nikki Miller of Washington, D.C.; one granddaughter, Katherine Allen of Oregon; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Katlyn of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.
