A Freeport woman who declined to be identified, right, collected signatures in Rumford on Tuesday in an effort to force a statewide referendum on Maine’s gay marriage law. Shelley Elliott and Lexine Graham, both of Rumford, and Elliott’s son, Malachi Knox, age 6, stand near the Hannaford parking lot, background, holding signs in support of the law. The Freeport woman said she had gathered a fairly significant number of signatures, while Graham said many people honked in support of the recent law.
