AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Two students from Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor are the recipients of this year’s George J. Mitchell Peace Scholarships.

Gov. John Baldacci on Wednesday presented the scholarships to Kathryn Harlan of Bucksport and Christopher Young of Bangor.

The scholarships provide tuition, travel and expenses for a semester or an academic year of study in Ireland’s Cork Institute of Technology. The program was created a decade ago in recognition of Mitchell’s efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland.

Harlan and Young submitted an essay on why it would be important to them to spend a semester in Ireland. Baldacci said both share an Irish heritage as well as a desire to experience different cultures and pass along that knowledge and experience when they return from Ireland.
