RUMFORD — People from all over the country – and even some from other countries – will stride or pedal off from Lewiston for the Dempsey Challenge on Oct. 4. The challenge is a fundraiser for the Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at Central Maine Medical Center, which was founded with a major gift from Patrick Dempsey, star of TV’s Gray’s Anatomy.

The Dempsey Center has many support and education components for cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers. The center also provides an oncology social worker and programs to Bridgton and Rumford hospitals.
Team Rumford Hospital will host a kick-off from 7 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, in the hospital cafeteria. The public is invited to stop by to learn more about the Dempsey Challenge, to sign up to join Team Rumford Hospital, or log on to the Web site on one of the laptops that will be available..
In addition to 100-, 50-, 25- and 10-mile bike courses, there will be a 5K run/walk. The bike courses wind from Lewiston through the lakes region, the 100-mile going as far as Bridgton.
Sign-up will continue throughout the summer, but Team Rumford Hospital is hoping to have all its members signed up before customized bike and T-shirts are ordered in a couple of weeks. People who are unable to attend the kick-off may go to www.dempseychallenge.org to sign up, then call 369-1000 to register bike (riders) or T-shirt (walkers) size.
