John Frederick Dumont

1936 – 2009

MERIDEN, Conn. — John Frederick Dumont, 72, was granted his angel wings on Wednesday, June 24, after an unexpected diagnosis and sudden fight with lung cancer.

He was a man who was passionate about his family. He loved to have family gathered to create memories by playing, eating and telling stories. He was known for his “can do” spirit.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1936, at home in Old Town, to Doris (Fogarty) and Camille. He was the fourth of seven children.

During his lifetime, he resided in Mexico, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Cape Girardeau, Mo. In Mexico, he served on the water district board and was a town selectman. His career as a foreman/supervisor took him to construction projects throughout the state of Maine and other states. He worked for Bridge Construction out of Augusta, P. H. Chadbourne Construction out of Bethel, and Bancroft Construction out of South Paris. He also bred labrador retrievers as a hobby.

He used his keen ability to lead others and organize projects to spend 19 years as a resident manager of luxury condominiums in Honolulu. On Jan. 1, 1988, he married his soulmate, Anne (Stratton) Dumont in Kauai. They spent many wonderful years together in Hawaii until her passing in 1995. He retired in August 2004 to Cape Girardeau, Mo., where he continued with his passion for woodworking and helping others. He volunteered at the ICU at a local hospital every week as a tribute to his late daughter, Lisa Dumont Colson.

He is survived and forever loved by his children, Carl Dumont and his wife, Darcy, of Columbia, Kevin Dumont and wife, Carmen, of San Francisco, Calif., Tammy Dumont Fisher and her husband, Jim, of Sabattus, Tasha Dumont Purington and her husband, Chris, of Hickam AFB, Hawaii; he is admired by his grandchildren who he endearingly called “his grands,” Stephanie Colson, Maggie and Jack (his namesake) Dumont, Zack, Sabrina and Gabriella Fisher, and Ashley, Megan, Lisa, and Emily Purington;his siblings, brothers, Ovid “Sonny” Dumont and his wife, Joanne, of Howland, James “Jimmy” Dumont and his wife, Donna, of Old Town, foster sister, Donna Perry of Florida; and his sister and best friend, Emma O’Brien and her husband, Ed, of Meriden, Conn.;18 nieces and nephews; and many more extended family members. He was especially close with his nephew, Rick Walker.

Those waiting on the shores of heaven to welcome him home were his brothers, Robert and Louis Dumont; parents, Camille and Doris Dumont; little sister, Doris “Dottie” Cox; his soulmate, Anne (Stratton) Dumont; and his daughter, Lisa Dumont Colson. His favorite black lab Babe was also waiting.
