100 years ago, 1909

Mike Cunningham had the better of Tommy Bergin in a six round boxing exhibition Monday afternoon at the Fair Grounds. Bergin did good work, showing up even better than usual while Cunningham appeared to be a little slow. Some thought him to be holding back.The bout was a good one, one of the best that has been seen in the city for some time. While there was no knockout and both men were on their feet at the end of the sixth, Cunningham plainly had the better of the contest.

50 years ago, 1959

Hundreds of gallons of fuel oil was lost late yesterday morning when an underground tank sprang a leak at L. & A. Fuel Co., 374 Lincoln St., Lewiston. Firemen and the Union Water Power Co. cooperated in getting the mess cleaned up after the oil spilled over the immediate area and flowed into the canal nearby. Firemen said fuel in the tank apparently expanded with the warm temperatures and spilled out when a pipe coupling let go. A spokesman for the fire department said the loss might have reached 1,000 gallons.

25 years ago, 1984

The “scoopers” are on the move. Cote’s Ice Cream, which has carried the name of Lewiston to ice cream lovers far and wide, has opened a fourth shop at the Super Shop and Save Plaza at 295 Forest Ave., Portland. The new shop is the first one outside the Twin Cities and marks the latest step in what promises to be a continuing expansion program, said manager Nancy Cote.
