AUBURN — Mechanics Savings Bank recently awarded a $1,000 Banking on the Future Scholarship to Poland Regional High School graduate Brittney N. Bell. She is the daughter of Nancy Bell of Poland. 
Bell, the 2009 class Salutatorian, was a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Dance Team, Green Team, the Student Judiciary Board, Drama Club and Graduation Committee and served as a Student Ambassador. She was a member of Poland’s soccer and cross country teams and served as co-captain of the indoor and outdoor track teams.
Bell has received numerous academic honors and awards including the Williams College Book Award. Her athletic achievements include the 2008 Outdoor Track Class B State Championship in the 400-meter and second place in the 200-meter race.
In 2005 and 2006, Bell served as a volunteer track coach helping to train elementary school athletes on the Poland Panthers Track Club. In 2007 and 2008, she served as a volunteer coach for the Poland Middle School track team. Bell has also contributed many hours to various community fundraising activities including the Light the Knights campaign and a heating oil assistance fundraiser. 
In the fall, Bell will attend Colby College where she plans to major in biology, with a career goal of becoming a dentist.
For more than 20 years, Mechanics Savings Bank has provided scholarships to assist high school graduates with their higher education goals. This year, with a focus on demonstrated community service, the Banking on the Future Scholarship program awarded $1,000 to 17 high school graduates at nine area high schools.
