Lester and Phyllis
Hill
MONMOUTH — Lester E. and Phyllis A. Hill Jr. of Monmouth celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Thursday, June 18, with a day to the Maine coast with their family.
Mr. Hill and the former Phyllis Foster were married at the Monmouth United Church on June 18, 1949, by the Rev. Edward Moore. The wedding was followed by an outdoor reception.
Mr. Hill is a Navy veteran and was employed for many years as a foreman at the Auburn Die and O’Brien Die Companies in Auburn. Mrs. Hill taught for many years at Walton School in Auburn. They are the parents of Rodney Hill of Minot, Patricia St. Hilaire of Auburn and Susan Bixby of Sanbornville, N.H.
Mrs. Hill reminisced about her wedding day, 60 years ago. The church was decorated with wreaths of bridal veil sprigs on each pew and baskets of white peonies. It was an unusually hot day for the season. The bride’s gown of satin, worn 25 years later by her daughter, Patricia, at her own wedding on June 22, 1974, is still as pretty as the day Mrs. Hill wore it down the aisle. The couple sped away from the reception in Mr. Hill’s Model-A Ford, bound for a honeymoon at a little cottage in Alfred.
Since retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Hill spend their summers at a cottage in Monmouth and winters in Englewood, Fla.
